The Benefits of Coffee (And why you should enjoy that cup a day)

You may know that you love the smell and taste of coffee, and you may know that you need at least two cups a day to be at your best, but do you actually know anything about coffee? Are you aware of all of the extra health benefits you may be getting with those delightfully warm drinks you consume?

If you’ve seen someone throwing back a cup of joe before their workout, you may not want to judge them! In fact, those who are drinking coffee before their workouts may have the upper hand on their workout, and it’s all because of that steamy beverage.

Much research has been done about the effects of coffee on people who are working out, and it has shown that coffee may enhance your workout experience and results. One experiment found that those who had coffee before a controlled exercise found the task much easier to complete than those who had a placebo. Following the exercise, the groups were then both exposed to a buffet for lunch, where the coffee drinkers had significantly smaller appetites than those who had the placebo, thereby ingesting fewer calories.

Caffeine may also help to increase adrenaline, thereby preparing the body more fully for physical exertion and, as a result, a better workout. Still not impressed? Caffeine is also said to cause fat cells to break down, releasing them into the bloodstream and using them as fuel for your exercise. If you’re looking for a new tool in your workout regime, coffee may be it! But try to consume it at least half an hour before a workout, as opposed to during.


Don’t underestimate the power of a cup of coffee. According to Self Nutrition Data, 1 cup (237 g) of coffee has 11% of your daily recommended Riboflavin, which is a part of the vitamin-B complex and is great for metabolic energy production.

A cup of coffee will also give you 6% of your daily recommended Pantothenic Acid, which is also a part of the vitamin-B complex and is essential to helping oxidize fats and carbohydrates.  Other helpful nutrients also include 3% of your RDA of Potassium, 3% of your RDA of Manganese and 2% of your RDA of Magnesium.

Drinking more than one cup a day? Double or triple these numbers, depending on the number you typically have in a regular day.


While this is not true for every individual who has coffee, researchers have done studies that show that coffee can protect the body from various types of diseases.

High consumption of coffee has been shown to drastically reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes in various studies. It may also have the ability to protect individuals from Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease. Studies have shown that coffee drinkers have a 32-60% reduced risk of obtaining Parkinson’s, based on various experiments.

As mentioned, this will not be the case for every individual; however, studies have shown a correlation between coffee consumption and a lower risk for the mentioned diseases.

A wide variety of other studies have taken place focused around the benefits of coffee consumption. Some of the other associated benefits of drinking coffee include better moods, lower risk of stroke, longer life expectancies and a huge portion of your daily intake of antioxidants.
